This painting presents a serene autumn landscape dominated by a river or small lake surrounded by trees. The scene conveys an intense sense of calm, silence, and contemplation, as if nature were suspended in a moment of absolute stillness. The abundance of ochre, reddish, golden and green tones envelops the composition in a warm atmosphere, while the water softly reflects the surroundings and adds depth to the landscape. On the right side stand several tall, robust trunks that occupy a prominent position. The nearest tree has a wide, dark trunk, slightly inclined, rising until it disappears among the upper branches. Next to it, lighter trunks introduce yellowish and greenish hues that seem to correspond to light filtering through the vegetation. The branches extend from the right side toward the center and the upper left, forming a natural arch over the water. Their long, delicate lines visually organize the composition and guide the gaze into the distance. The leaves, represented through a wide variety of reds, oranges, coppers and browns, announce clearly the arrival of autumn. Some branches descend to approach the water’s surface, adding a sense of closeness and movement. The small reddish leaves seem to float before the landscape and create a light foreground that contrasts with the solidity of the large trunks. This arrangement gives the impression that the viewer is looking at the scene from under the canopy of a tree. The right bank is covered by a thick carpet of fallen leaves. The golden, ochre and brown tones transform the ground into a warm and luminous surface that gently slopes toward the water. Among the leaves stand out roots, stones and small patches of vegetation that enrich the terrain and reinforce its natural appearance. Several rocks in tones of violet, gray and reddish mark the meeting between shore and water. Their stepped arrangement creates a soft transition toward the river and guides the eye toward the center of the scene. These stones introduce solid shapes in contrast with the fluidity of the water and the lightness of the leaves. Water occupies much of the lower left half and appears calm, almost motionless. Its surface reflects the trunks, canopies and the sky’s luminosity, though the shapes appear softly blurred. Dull greens, grays, beiges and browns blend in the reflection, creating a sense of depth and a delicate continuity between the real landscape and its image on the water. On the opposite shore there stretches a narrow band of illuminated earth, accompanied by slender trees and low vegetation. This area marks the water’s edge and leads the gaze toward the background. The yellows and golds of the bank contrast with the grayish greens of the distant trees, suggesting a soft, diffused light. Beyond there is a small hill and numerous masses of trees that gradually fade into the distance. Their colors are more muted and bluish, creating a sense of atmospheric depth. The background seems to be covered by a light mist that softens edges and reinforces the tranquil, contemplative nature of the landscape. The sky is barely perceptible through the branches and canopies, but its clarity illuminates the entire scene. The light appears to correspond to a cloudy day or early hour when the sun does not yet cast strong shadows. This uniform illumination allows the autumnal colors to be appreciated without disturbing the overall serenity of the scene. The absence of human figures makes the place a natural retreat away from noise and daily activity. Everything seems at rest: the branches, the water and the fallen leaves. Yet, the color changes remind us that the landscape is in full transformation and that autumn slowly advances across the forest. Overall, the work offers a harmonious and poetic view of an autumnal landscape by the water, where the tall trees, reddish branches, golden leaves and reflections form a scene full of serenity. The composition invites stopping to contemplate the beauty of a silent nature, marked by the passage of time and the transformation of the seasons. The result is an intimate, enveloping, and deeply evocative landscape.
