Jug - Terracotta - Mexican

Jug in Tonalá pottery (Mexican handicraft) Estimated age: Mid-20th century (approximately 1950–1970) Materials: Hand-painted terracotta Style: Traditional Mexican (Tonalá style or 'bruñido') Origin: Tonalá, Jalisco, Mexico Historical significance: Tonalá pottery is one of the oldest ceramic traditions in Mexico, dating back to the pre-Columbian era. It combines indigenous techniques with Spanish colonial influences. The 'bruñido' style is famous for its stone-polishing technique, creating a smooth and glossy finish without glaze. Painting is traditionally done with natural mineral pigments found in the region. The polishing process (bruñido) uses a smooth river stone to press the design into the damp clay. Tonalá is nicknamed the 'capital of crafts' in Mexico.
