Jules Atarax (1985) - The Last cigarette

The Last Cigarette is a contemporary portrait imbued with mystery and melancholy, in which Jules Atarax explores the boundaries between presence, absence, and identity. A woman with long hair, wearing a turquoise coat, holds a cigarette to her lips. Her face, deliberately erased, escapes any identification. Only the intense red of the mouth, the delicacy of the gesture, and the silhouette of a being absorbed in thought remain. The composition rests on a subtle palette of grays, pale pinks, and turquoise blues. The diffuse light and the fine vertical lines of the background create a suspended, almost cinematic atmosphere. The reddish smoke rising slowly becomes a graphic element in its own right, evoking the passage of time and the fragility of the moment. The contrast between the expressive precision of the hand and the erasure of the face constitutes the heart of the work. By stripping the character of distinctive traits, the artist turns a daily scene into a more universal questioning of solitude, intimacy, and memory. The oil painting, worked with visible brushstrokes and superpositions, preserves a spontaneity that gives the figure a presence at once fragile and disturbing. The Last Cigarette does not tell a precise story. It suggests a moment of silence, a moment between two thoughts, leaving the viewer free to imagine what precedes or what follows.
