Typical flower still life by the Belgian artist Julien Stappers (1875-1960). This characterful oil painting exudes the atmosphere of the early 20th-century Belgian still life school. The work captivates the viewer with an intimate floral motif: two lush dahlias, painted in warm, sun-drenched tones of deep orange and gold-yellow. The flowers light up against a moody, dusky background, in which the vague contours of a dark, glossy tin can or vase are subtly reflected. The impasto, lively brushwork bears witness to the mastery and the impressionist influences that are so characteristic of Julien Stappers' flower compositions. The canvas is in a well-worn, authentic condition that contributes to the historical charm of the piece. The surface shows a fine, natural network of old craquelé inherent in an oil painting of this age. The paint patina is beautifully aged and the colors have gained a warm, nostalgic depth over the years. The work is housed in the original, sturdy wooden frame with patinated gold- and silver-toned finishes, which bears light signs of use and an authentically aged character that perfectly complements the antique character. A stunning collectible with a soul. - Artist: Julien Stappers - Medium: Oil on canvas - Title: Dahlias - Dimensions: 40 x 50 cm (without frame); 54 x 64 cm (with frame) - Period: 1940-1950 Julien Stappers (1875–1960) was a leading Belgian painter who gained wide fame in the first half of the 20th century. He is remembered today as a master of the flower still life, valued for his sunny, bright color palette and refined technique. Stappers was born on August 9, 1875 in Chênée (province of Liège). His father, Leopold Stappers, was a music teacher and originally from Alken in Limburg. His mother, Marie Bormans, died when Julien was only thirteen, after which the family later moved to Hasselt. Stappers received a solid and academic art education at the top institutions of the time: the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp and the Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) in Antwerp. Stappers exhibited frequently throughout his active career in renowned Belgian art salons and galleries. In 1898 his official debut took place at the Salon de Namur in the Halle Du Kursaal in Namur. In 1950 an exhibition took place at the prestigious Cercle des Beaux-Arts in Liège. Special thematic exhibitions were organized during the period 1951-1956 during the famous Grape Festivals in Hoeilaart, where his flower and fruit still lifes perfectly aligned with the atmosphere. He spent most of the later part of his life and career in Brussels, where he died on 17 April 1960 in Sint-Pieters-Woluwe.
