North America, United States, Hawaii, Honokaa, Kama'aina Woods. A deep, lathe-turned koa wood bowl from Kama'aina Woods, a workshop in Honokaa on the Big Island of Hawaii. The walls rise from a narrow base, swell into a full, rounded belly, and turn gently inward at a plain, thinly finished rim. The turner placed the blank so the grain shows at its best. Bands of honey, russet, and dark chocolate wrap around the body, and in places the figure shimmers as the light moves across the polished surface. The interior is just as smooth, with streaked grain running down into the well. The underside is incised "Kama'aina Woods / Honokaa, Hawaii / Koa", identifying the workshop, its home town, and the wood. The bowl's simple, unornamented shape lets the native hardwood do the work. Koa (Acacia koa) grows only in the Hawaiian Islands and has long been the most prized of Hawaiian hardwoods. It was traditionally used for canoes and paddles, and later for furniture and ukuleles. Its curly or "fiddleback" figure catches the light with a silky shimmer that collectors value highly. In the twentieth century, turned koa bowls became a mainstay of Hawaiian woodworking, made for island households and visitors alike. Small family workshops such as Kama'aina Woods in Honokaa, a former sugar town on the Hamakua Coast, carried on this trade.
