λ CAREL WEIGHT (BRITISH 1908-1997) PLEASURE CRUISE Oil on canvas 35.5 x 97cm (13¾ x 38in.) Painted circa 1933. Provenance: Leicester Galleries, London Private collection, Mrs J. Crittell The current lot relates closely to a larger work that Carel Weight painted in 1951 and is in the collection of Gallery Oldham. This work is titled As I wend to the shores I know not, As I list to the dirge, the voices of men and women wreck’d. These lines come from As I Ebb’d with the Ocean of Life by the Nineteenth Century American poet, Walt Whitman. First published in 1860 the poem explores the subjects of self-doubt and existential vulnerability through the temporary nature of life and the inevitability of death and decay, in the end recognising and accepting that the individual, although ultimately small, is still part of the larger mysterious cycle of the universe. These themes around the temporality of life within a cruel and beautiful world fascinated Weight and he explored them throughout his career using ghostly spirits, and biblical and poetic references, all set within the familiar landscape of rural and urban England.
