Provenance: Sale, Bonhams, Oxford, 8 September 2010, lot 43 Abbott & Holder, London Acquired from the above by the present owner on 16 November 2010 Winifred Nicholson made an extended visit to Crete in 1963 of about a month travelling all over the island. She wrote home from Matala "I am sitting by an azure sea, turquoise transparent, sapphire bright. There are great golden cliffs that plunge down into the sea on both sides of this gulf. It is the ancient harbour of Phaistos, the Minoan palace. It is the southernmost point of Greece, 100 miles from Africa." We are grateful to Jovan Nicholson for his kind assistance in cataloguing this lot.
