LALANDE (Joseph-Jérôme de). On Navigation Canals, and Especially the Languedoc Canal. Paris, Veuve Desaint, 1778. Folio, marbled sheepskin, decorated spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding). First edition of this study of canals built or planned primarily in Languedoc, as well as in Franche-Comté, Alsace, Lorraine, Champagne; on the Briare Canal, the oldest in France; and on river navigation, tolls, and canals in Italy, Spain, and other countries in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The work is illustrated with 14 technical plates, including 4 fold-outs, most of which were engraved by Ransonnette. Handwritten bookplate on the title page reading “Exempt Academiae Burdigal,” accompanied by a stamp from the Library of the Academy of Sciences in Bordeaux. Corners and lower edge frayed.
