Langley (Batty) New Principles of Gardening: or, the Laying out and Planting Parterres, Groves, Wildernesses, Labyrinths, Avenues, Parks, &c., first edition, title in red and black, 28 engraved folding or double-page plates, engraved initials, head- and tail-pieces, one plate cropped at edges affecting image, one or two plates with short splits to foldlines, D4 cancel and cancellandum both bound in, N1 with small marginal loss to bottom edge (not affecting text), occasional faint marginal dust-soiling, bookplates, contemporary calf, a little rubbed, slight bumping to corners and extremities, [Berlin Kat. 3414; Harris 462; Henrey 927], 4to, 1728 [1727]. Langley disliked formality in garden design and favoured planting in what appeared a natural manner. He is particularly known for his labyrinths and this work includes many plans of mazes, also much on kitchen and physic gardens. In this issue, there is an 'Advertisement to the nobility and gentry of Great Britain' printed on the verso of the title, and there are four contents leaves inserted after the introduction. Pages iv and v in the preliminaries are mis-numbered xi and x.
