An imposing anthropomorphic terracotta prestige vessel, known indigenously as a nembwo, created by the Mangbetu peoples of the Uele River basin in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, dating to the mid-20th century. Hand-modeled through traditional coil-construction techniques and fired in an open reduction bonfire, the vessel displays a rich, variegated dark earthenware body with burnished, smoked umber and graphite-toned surfaces. Conceived as a masterful sculptural synthesis of utilitarian receptacle and courtly portraiture, the cylindrical neck terminates in an expressive human head surmounted by an expansive, flaring trumpet rim. This striking silhouette directly evokes the Edamburu, the prestige halo headdress of woven fiber traditionally worn by aristocratic Mangbetu women to emphasize Lipombo - the intentional cranial elongation practiced in infancy as a marker of noble lineage and refined aesthetic ideals. The facial features are sculpted with remarkable sensitivity: hooded, coffee-bean eyelids beneath subtle brow ridges, a flared aquiline nose, and parted lips displaying traditional incisor modification. Dense fields of punctate stippling and diagonal dotted scarification patterns (beli) accentuate the temples, cheeks, and throat, visually echoed across the globular lower chamber in curvilinear relief registers. A single sturdy strap handle connects the rear neck to the upper shoulder, creating a balanced, dynamic counterweight to the vessel’s vertical thrust. Weighing a substantial 3.2 kg, the vessel exhibits a dense, tactile ceramic body with subtle handling sheen and warm mineral patination across its rounded, unglazed base. While utilitarian pottery served everyday domestic purposes, anthropomorphic nembwo of this distinguished scale functioned as elite vessels for palm wine or water during royal audiences and ceremonial gatherings, operating as potent emblems of aristocratic prestige and matrilineal honor. The piece is preserved in good, structurally sound condition consistent with traditional open-pit firing and authentic domestic use. A fine, stabilized hairline crack extends through the flared upper rim of the headdress, and a distinct, stable hairline fissure is present across the upper helix of the right modeled ear at the point of attachment, without material loss or displacement. The vessel displays minor, authentic age-related surface abrasions, scattered pitting, and softening along the extremities, preserving its sculptural integrity and structural density. Exhibiting commanding proportions, refined surface tooling, and an evocative facial countenance, this nembwo is a compelling testament to the sophisticated sculptural ceramic traditions of the Uele region. Its interplay of graphic scarification and aristocratic portraiture ensures it stands as an authoritative, highly displayable centerpiece for serious collections of classical Central African art. PROVENANCE Property from the Estate of a German biologist and naturalist (1948–2012). Thence by descent to the present owner.
