Large fossil skull fragment of a steppe bison (Bison priscus) – Pleistocene (Ice Age) For sale is an impressive and massive fossil skull fragment (cranium with both horn cores) of an Ice Age steppe bison (Bison priscus), also known as the steppe wisent. These mighty wild bovids were the dominant large mammals of the Ice Age mammoth steppe. This spectacular collectible piece captivates with its monumental presence and the typical, broad and upward-curving horn orientation. • Excellent bone structure: The back (occiput) perfectly displays the fascinating, honeycomb-like pneumatisation (air chambers in the bone) that drastically reduced the weight of the massive head in life, without diminishing stability for territorial fights. • Natural details: On the horn cores the deep, characteristic longitudinal grooves of the blood vessels are visible, which once supplied nutrients to the (now gone) outer horn sheath made of keratin. The underside shows the large foramen magnum and the two well-preserved occipital condyles. • Preservation: The fossil is heavy, highly mineralized and features a beautiful, authentic coloration from thousands of years of storage in Ice Age river sediments.
