Large Pendant-Brooch with Excellent Aquamarine in Platinum, c. 1925

A garden of ice: roses covered in frost bow their heads between delicately veined leaves. At their center, a frozen lake shines in cool, bright blue. This scene is captured here in the most precious of materials. A large aquamarine weighing around 40.40 ct with a wonderful, intense color is the centerpiece of the jewel. It is held by three-dimensionally designed prongs that form part of the large oval frame made of platinum filigree. Full rosebuds and leaves are formed here from the finest platinum bars. Narrow borders of matching cut onyx create an attractive, modern contrast between the platinum frame and aquamarine. To ensure that the precious aquamarine can be worn as often as possible, the piece is fitted with two mountings. On the one hand, a bail with a large brilliant-cut diamond makes the piece wearable as a necklace on a platinum chain. Alternatively, a frame can be screwed on so that the piece can be worn as a brooch. An additional pin is attached next to the pin so that the brooch does not tilt despite its weight. This piece was created around 1925, at the height of Art Deco. Cool, geometric shapes dominated the world of jewellery, but a few jewellers, such as Lacloche Frères, used more romantic motifs such as the rose: an elegant, charming contrast between the austerity of the machine age and the soft forms of nature. The daring duet of aquamarine and onyx is also typical of the time and was to enrich the world of jewellery with a new gemstone combination in this decade. The piece is very well preserved. Only the large diamond on the pendant bail was added at a later date. The chain was created around the same time as the pendant. We commissioned an independent gemological appraisal to confirm the quality and value of the materials. It will be delivered with the jewel.
