Large wrought iron medieval castle torch, France, late Middle Ages

Descriptio Rare and important wrought iron standing torch with a tripod base of long, arched branches. The vertical shaft, articulated with faceted joints, supports two large, overlapping circular trays with crenellated edges, designed to collect wax drippings. The upper part features a system of curved iron arms to hold a large candle or torch; the architectural character of its crenellated edges evokes the fortified finials typical of the Gothic decorative repertoire. This type of large torch was used to illuminate monumental interiors, both civil and religious. Oxidation, wear, deformation, and deterioration are present. France, Gothic period, late Middle Ages, 16th century. Height: 66 cm; diameter: 38 cm. Lot in international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply within the EU.
