apoleon III Jacquard Damask Table Linen with Six Matching Napkins – The Iconic Blood-Red Border A beautiful piece of 19th-century French table linen, distinguished by its iconic blood-red borders, elegant floral damask and timeless Napoleon III character. This attractive set comprises a tablecloth measuring 2 metres in length, accompanied by six matching Jacquard damask linen napkins. The striking blood-red borders frame a charming pattern of open petunia flowers intertwined with leaves, creating a wonderfully decorative effect. Originally part of a complete set of twelve napkins, the collection has been divided into two lots of six to make these beautiful antiques more accessible to today's collectors and lovers of fine French linen. Should you wish to acquire the original collection in its entirety, the other six napkins are also available in this auction. The Napoleon III style – A French fashion of its time The Napoleon III style of damask weaving became enormously fashionable in France during the latter part of the 19th century. French households eagerly embraced this distinctive look for their breakfast and luncheon tables, and demand for the newly fashionable linen was so great that weavers could scarcely keep pace. By the 1920s, tastes were beginning to change. Checks and stripes were introduced in an attempt to offer something different, although these designs never quite achieved the same enduring appeal as the richly patterned Napoleon III style. Today, this distinctive style is enjoying renewed appreciation. Its unmistakable blood-red borders and beautifully woven damask are once again finding their place on carefully dressed tables, where they bring a touch of traditional French elegance. Preserved in the French wedding armoire Fine linen represented a considerable investment in the 19th century and was therefore treasured and carefully preserved. Many such pieces were returned to the traditional French wedding armoire after use, awaiting another special occasion. After decades spent safely stored away, this table linen is now ready to see the light of day once more and begin a new chapter on a beautifully laid table. An elegant floral design with two different effects The Napoleon III style is instantly recognisable by its deep, blood-red borders, incorporating a variety of decorative motifs. This particular set features open petunia flowers intertwined with leaves, producing a graceful and unmistakably French design. The Jacquard weaving allows the pattern to be appreciated on both sides. Interestingly, turning the linen over produces an even more pronounced blood-red effect, offering two subtly different presentations from the same set. Neither the tablecloth nor the napkins carries embroidered initials. This gives the collection a simple, unadorned elegance and leaves the beauty of the woven design to take centre stage. There may be several explanations for the absence of monograms. Perhaps the bride had not yet completed the embroidery intended for her trousseau, or the women of both families, including sisters living in convents who often contributed to such preparations, had not finished their work. In other cases, the disruption and tragedy of war may have left a wedding trousseau incomplete. Whatever its original story, this set has survived as a lovely example of traditional French table linen, preserving the distinctive character of an era when even the breakfast table was dressed with care and elegance. A charming opportunity to bring a little of that tradition back to your own table. PLEASE NOTE; There is a tiny hole at the side of the table linen. We have covered it with a piece of "thermo collant". The reason for this is that the French at the time would smoke during luncheon and the hot ash would not reach the ash tray in time and dropping hot ash on the linen. See last photo.
