BLAEU, Willem (1571–1638) and Joan Blaeu (1596–1673). Theatrum orbis terrarum, sive Atlas novum . In French: Le Théâtre du monde ou nouvel atlas contenant les chartes et descriptions de tous les pais de la terre . Amsterdam: J. Blaeu, 1643–1645. Hand-colored copy of the Blaeus’ first attempt at a large, multi-volume atlas of the world; the first three volumes, in the Blaeu’s original gold-tooled vellum binding. In 1634, Willem Blaeu published a German edition of a 2-volume atlas with a Latin title, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, sive Atlas Novus . This was followed by Latin, Dutch and French editions in 1635. The title deliberately echoed the previous efforts of Abraham Ortelius, while simultaneously signaling with the words Atlas Novus that this was a new publication at the fore-front of cartographic knowledge. Willem planned another two additional volumes, but these were only completed after his death, in 1640 and 1645. Willem's son, Joan, progressively expanded the Atlas Novus to six volumes by 1655, and this is the work in the present lot. In effect it forms the first half of the Atlas Major, which Joan saw through the press in following decade, in 1662. Van der Krogt II 2:612 (pp. 357–82). Volume I [Northern and Eastern Europe, Germania and the Low Countries]. Engraved title-page dated 1643, part title-page with printed overslip dated 1645 (repairs in folds of “Magni Ducatus Lithuaniae” and “Danubius”, crease in “Ducatus Brunsvicensis” parallel to gutter, “Flandriae Teutonicae pars orientalior” bound after “Duynkercken”, prominent toning in “Nova totius Germaniae Descriptio”, “Ducatus Brunsvicensis”, “Circulus Westphalicus”, “Typus Frisiae Orientalis”, “Deflandia”, “Transiselania” and “Drentia”). Volume II [France and Spain, and the continents]. Engraved title-page and part title-page with printed overslips dated 1645, 92 double-page engraved maps (without “Aragonia et Navarra” (Koeman [170]), “Magni Mogolis Imperium” bound after “Moluccae insulae celeberrimae”, larger repairs in folds of “Borbonium, Ducatus”, “Languedoc”, “Turcicum Imperium” and “Americae nova Tabula”, lower third of “Imperii Caroli Magni” supplied from another copy, prominent toning in “Languedoc”, “Gallia Vetus”, “Arragonia Regnum”, “Navarra Regnum”, “Guinea”, “Virginiae partis australis” and “Guiana sive Amazonum Regio”, marginal repairs in “Nova Virginiae tabula”, “Brasilia” (Koeman [301]) present in place of “Novus Brasiliae Typus” (Koeman [54])). Volume III [Italy and Greece with British Isles supplement]: Engraved title-page with printed overslip dated 1645, 66 engraved maps, all double-page save three (prominent toning in “Corsica Insula”, “Parte Alpestre dello Stati di Milano”, “Territorio di Pavia […]”, “Territorio di Vicenza” and “Candia”, larger repair in gutter of “Ducato di Mantoua”, “Romagna olim Flammia”, “Territorio di Bologna” and “Ducato di Ferrara” from Koeman Bl 35 G). Three volumes, folio (496 × 327mm). Five hand-colored engraved title-pages, some heightened in gold, 278 hand-colored maps, most double-page and some folding, maps embellished with cartouches, allegorical figures, coats-of-arms, ships, etc., numerous woodcut and engraved diagrams and illustrations in text, woodcut initials and ornaments (variable spotting, toning and staining, occasional small marginal chipping and repair). Publisher’s vellum, covers panelled in gold, center panels with arabesque corner- and center-pieces, spines tooled in gold, yapp edges, edges gilt (evidence of green silk ties, rubbed, stained).
