The two little girls—one in a smocked blue dress, the other in a gingham dress—have not moved an inch since the marching band turned the corner. What they are watching is the majorette. White boots, plume-topped shako, tall legs, chin up. They are not watching a parade: they are watching what they would like to become. No one will ever say it out loud. Low, late-afternoon raking light, heated bricks, blue and red pennants stretched across the sky.
