Subject and Theme: "SUPERMARIO STARRY GAMES & POWER UP V.1" is a pop and nostalgic diptych that takes the videogame imagery of the Eighties and paints it as if it had emerged from a late 19th-century easel. In "SUPERMARIO STARRY GAMES" the world’s most famous video game protagonist emerges from a vortex of thick brushstrokes: deep blues, bright yellows, and swirling reds around the face like a stormy sky. The face is built with spatula strokes, the expression remains friendly and familiar, while the hat lights up with a red neon that redraws its silhouette and transforms it into a sign. In "POWER UP V.1" the subject is reduced to the essential: the red mushroom, the most desired object of those games, painted on a light background with broad, tactile brushstrokes. A red neon traces its entire outline, making it float on the canvas like a suspended icon. The square format accentuates its nature as a pure symbol. Technique and Creation: Both works combine fine art print on rigid support with a red LED neon applied by hand: the hat profile in the first, the entire outline of the mushroom in the second. The painting language is the same in both, consisting of thick impasto and visible brushstrokes, but the register changes: the first is dense, vortex-like and saturated, the second airy and minimalist, almost a pop still life. Hung side by side, the vertical format and the square balance each other and the two neons create a single warm red light on the wall: perfect for a game room, a bedroom, a studio, or a themed venue. Inspiration and Curiosities: The swirl background of the first piece does not reference the starry night, but an even more intimate canvas: the self-portrait Vincent van Gogh painted in September 1889, where the figure emerges from a whirl of blues and is today housed at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. There is also a coincidence linking the two eras: the character was born in 1981 from Shigeru Miyamoto’s pencil, and its appearance was dictated by the technical limits of the time. With very few pixels available, the hat avoided having to animate hair, the mustache made the nose and mouth readable, and the overalls indicated where the arms ended. Constraints that, unintentionally, became one of the most recognizable designs of all time. The mushroom also has its date: it appeared in 1985 as the object that doubled the protagonist’s size, and since then its profile is legible even just as a silhouette, which is exactly what the neon does here.
