Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 77 × 53 cm. Dimensions with frame: 92 × 68 cm. This figurative and portrait-like work depicts a half-length portrait of a woman seated in a three-quarter view, her hands delicately resting on her lap and her face turned towards the viewer. It faithfully follows the famous iconographic model of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris. The figure displays a serene and enigmatic expression, characterized by a slight smile and a gaze of remarkable psychological intensity, elements that constitute some of the most recognizable features of the original composition. Her face, with its soft and delicately modeled features, is framed by long, dark hair that falls over her shoulders, while her clothing, in shades of black, brown, and green, is draped in ample folds that envelop the body and accentuate the figure’s elegance. In the background unfolds an imaginary mountainous landscape, composed of rock formations, winding paths, waterways, and hills that gradually fade into a horizon of bluish and greenish hues. The composition establishes a striking contrast between the monumental presence of the female figure and the atmospheric depth of the landscape, whose aerial perspective is one of the most characteristic elements of Leonardo da Vinci’s pictorial language. The soft, diffused lighting models the volumes of the face, neck, and hands through delicate transitions between light and shadow, evoking the celebrated sfumato technique, developed by Leonardo da Vinci to soften contours and give figures an appearance of extraordinary naturalness. The color palette, dominated by earthy tones, dark greens, ochres, and muted blues, contributes to creating an atmosphere of serenity and mystery, while the treatment of the flesh tones and the position of the hands reinforce the introspective nature of the portrait. The work belongs to the tradition of copies and reinterpretations of the great masters of the Italian Renaissance, especially Leonardo da Vinci, whose Mona Lisa, painted at the beginning of the 16th century, became one of the most influential models in the history of Western portraiture. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the extraordinary dissemination of Leonardo’s compositions fostered the creation of numerous versions destined for private collections, courtly settings, and performance spaces, contributing to perpetuating the artistic prestige of the Florentine master. The present painting reproduces the main compositional elements of the original model, especially the figure’s pose, the characteristic crossing of the hands, the facial expression, and the background landscape, although it presents particularities in its chromatic interpretation. The treatment of shadows and the definition of features demonstrate independent execution. Its formal conception maintains a direct relationship with the artistic universe of Leonardo da Vinci, especially through the use of atmospheric perspective, the softness of the modeling, and the pursuit of a complex psychological expression—characteristics that exerted a profound influence on subsequent generations of European painters. The painted surface exhibits a fine network of craquelure visible in various areas of the composition, particularly in the face and the landscape. The extent and age of this craquelure would require direct examination for proper assessment. It is presented in an elaborate, historicist-style gilt frame, profusely ornamented with vegetal motifs, scrolls, and Baroque-inspired elements, which enhances the visual presence and classical character of the work. This lot is located in an international warehouse (outside the EU). For shipments to the European Union, import duties and/or taxes will be applicable and are the responsibility of the buyer.
