Letter of Appeal from Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski to Rabbi Yechezkel

Vilna, 1937. A poignant letter from the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski, one of the foremost rabbinic authorities of his generation, appealing to Rabbi Yechezkel Abramsky for financial assistance on behalf of their esteemed colleague, the Gaon Rabbi Shimon Shkop, who was gravely ill and in urgent need of medical treatment. Rabbi Chaim Ozer writes Written by Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski’s secretary, with a line in the Gaon’s own handwriting and his signature: He adds two further lines in his own handwriting: An important historical document reflecting the personal concern and charitable efforts of Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski on behalf of Rabbi Shimon Shkop during his grave illness. (1863-1940) was a foremost rabbi of his generation and leader of European Jewry. He was the son of R. David Shlomo Grodzinski, Rabbi of Iwye. He was renowned from his childhood for his exceptional brilliance. He entered the Volozhin yeshiva at the young age of 11, and became a disciple of Reb Chaim of Brisk. At the age of 24, he was appointed rabbi and posek of Vilna, succeeding his father-in-law R. Eliyahu Eliezer Grodnansky, a posek in Vilna (son-in-law of R. Yisrael Salanter). He assumed the yoke of public leadership from a young age, and his opinion was conclusive on all public issues which arose throughout the Jewish world for close to fifty years. (1886–1976), author of Chazon Yechezkel, was one of the foremost Torah scholars and leaders of Orthodox Jewry in the twentieth century. He served as a member of the Council of Torah Sages of Agudath Israel, head of the Slabodka Yeshiva, president of the Vaad HaYeshivot, and head of the rabbinical court in London. He became especially renowned for his monumental commentary on the Tosefta. book
