[LIGER (Louis)] - [Oeconomie générale de la campagne

LIGER (Louis) [General Economy of the Countryside, or The New Rustic House.] [Paris, Charles de Sercy, 1700.] 1 volume (of 2) in-4 (25.5 x 19.8 cm), (3) ff., 470 pp., (7) ff., bound. Marbled calf, spine with raised bands ornamented, title piece, gilt roulette on the edges, speckled edges. Contemporary binding. Volume I missing, title page missing, hairlines at the spine caps, corners roughly restored, beginning of a crack on the hinges (rear hinge split for 5.5 cm from the foot), circular stain on the second leaf, restoration on the first pastedown, second pastedown missing, damp stain along the border of the first leaves, some tears without loss. Used wear. Second volume of the original edition of this important treatise devoted to the economy and exploitation of the countryside. Published for the first time in 1700 in two volumes, the work underwent numerous reissues and was later published under the title Nouvelle maison rustique. Liger gathers all the knowledge necessary for the management of a rural property: agriculture, livestock, poultry, beekeeping, gardens, fruit trees, vine, hunting and cooking. The last book is notably devoted to the “pleasures of the countryside,” with discussions on cooking, jams, pastries and liqueurs. The work thus fits within the tradition of the great treatises on agriculture and rural life, while enjoying wide diffusion throughout the eighteenth century. Manuscript ex-libris of “Victor. 1828.” A few marginal annotations.
