After World War II NS urgently needed rolling stock. From the Swiss SBB 22 steam locomotives of the A3/5 603-649 series taken out of service were acquired. The locomotives would from 1946 be put into service as NS series 3501-3522. They received the nickname 'Goudvinken' due to the brass decorations.
