Louis Haché - Visages de femmes

These pencil drawings by Louis Haché (1922-2013) form a set of studies of female portraits from the early 1990s. The five sheets depict young women in varied framing and poses: full face, three-quarter view, or slightly profile. Despite these pose differences, the overall work maintains a strong stylistic unity, based on precise drawing and a particular attention to the eyes and expressions. Born in Ixelles, Louis Haché led a remarkably varied career, spanning illustration, comic art, and painting. After working as a graphic designer and advertising illustrator, he became independent in 1953 and collaborated notably with the Tintin newspaper, La Libre Belgique, Éditions du Lombard, and Éditions Marabout. He progressively devoted himself to painting, exclusively since 1974. His long experience in drawing and illustration is evident here in the mastery of line and in the meticulous construction of faces. Facial features are shaped by fine hatching, highlights, and light shading effects, while hairstyles and clothing are often treated more freely and spontaneously. The portrait occupies an important place in Haché’s output. He particularly used gouache for his early portraits, then charcoal, sanguine, and pencil for studies of nudes and faces. In this set, he explores less the psychological individuality of the models than the variations of attitudes, hairstyles, gazes, and expressions. The care given to the eyes, the mouth, and the modeling of the face nevertheless lends each figure a distinctive presence. Thus this ensemble testifies to the more intimate and experimental dimension of Louis Haché’s graphic work, at the boundary between portrait study and illustration. The realistic precision of the drawing blends with a search for softness, elegance, and idealization, particularly noticeable in the treatment of the female faces.
