ATTERO Louis (1870-1915) " La route blanche le long de l'étang de Berre " Oil on panel, Signed bottom right, Beautiful work by the Marseille painter Louis Nattero that depicts the road along the Berre lagoon, animated by a mother and her child, leading to Martigues. In the background one can notably discern the town's bell tower. The work is finely executed and perfectly captures the atmosphere of a summer day in Provence, under a blazing light. After an unhappy childhood, placed in an orphanage, he turned to painting. In 1891, he married in Toulon. At age 26, thanks to a grant from the city of Toulon, he became a pupil of Léon Bonnat in Paris. However, afflicted by saturnism, he was forced to shorten his Parisian studies. He then returned to Toulon before settling permanently in Marseille, his hometown, in 1904. His talent was quickly recognized and his paintings enjoyed strong popularity with the Marseille and Toulon clientele. He began participating in exhibitions in Toulon and Marseille as early as 1902, where his talent was rewarded with numerous prizes. Dimensions: 19 x 45 cm without frame and 34 x 60.5 cm with its original carved and gilded wooden frame. Our work can form a diptych with the other painter's painting " La point du Brescon aux Martigues " currently for sale.
