LT COLONEL SIR HENRY EARLE THIRD BARONET OF ALLERTON TOWR, DSO. A SILVER WAR BADGE, SWAGGER STICK AND SMALL ARCHIVE. A silver topped swagger stick for the 51st Light Infantry (70.5 cm). Three buttons, travelling ink well, Zeiss field glasses as apparently used in South Africa and a First World War Silver War Badge number 240092, three obituaries, a letter and history. Sir Henry Earle (1854-1939) was educated at Eton, Trinity Oxford and Downing Cambridge. He joined the army in 1876 as a Lieutenant with the 22nd Regiment before transferring to the 51st Light Infantry, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Major from 1894, Lt Colonel from 1900, he took part in the Jowaki Expedition of 1877, Afghan War of 1878-80, In Egypt, Burma and other locations. His DSO was awarded for his service in Burma. Seriously wounded in the Zulu Wars when receiving a stab wound to the chest in close quarter fighting, having to pull a spear from his chest. Left for dead it was his Batman 'Sparks' who found him in the dark after the battle. A slow recovery followed in time for him to be active 'in his war' the Boer War. He retired from the Army in 1902 leaving the Reserve in 1909. During the Great War he served as an Intelligence Officer, the Silver War Badge perhaps suggesting he was not sufficiently fit to continue serving.
