Luca Giordano (1634-1705) - Noël Le Mire (1724-1801)...

Original engraving in aquaforte (etching) and burin from the 18th century, commissioned by abbot Jean-Claude Richard de Saint-Non. They are part of the famous editorial work “Voyage pittorèsque ou Description des royaumes de Naples et de Sicile,” published in Paris around 1780–1785. Details of the two scenes • On the left (No. 41): Displays the famous Madonna of the Rosary (also known as the Madonna of the Baldacchino), painted by Giordano around 1686. The Virgin and Child are depicted beneath a sumptuous baldacchino held up by angels, surrounded by Dominican saints. The original painting is today housed at the National Museum of Capodimonte. • On the right (No. 42): Shows an interior sacred scene, traditionally identified with the Nativity of the Virgin with Saint Anne or the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, characterized by the typical Baroque dynamism with women tending the newborn around a large basin of water and angels watching from above. Prints on a single plate and a single sheet, impression on laid paper with watermarks. Excellent inking and good condition, traces of foxing and browning as shown in the photos. Sheet intact with wide original margins. Insured shipping via Bartolini/DPD courier. To benefit from insurance coverage, any damage to the neck area must be contested and reported to the courier at the time of delivery. Otherwise, the insurance reimbursement procedure cannot be activated. Painting: Luca Giordano (1634–1705) Drawing: Charles-Nicolas Cochin (the Younger, 1715–1790) Engraver: Noël Le Mire (1724–1801) Publisher: Jean-Claude Richard de Saint-Non (1727–1791) Jean-Claude Richard de Saint-Non (Paris, 1727 – Paris, 1791), universally known as the abbot de Saint-Non, was a central figure of French Enlightenment culture, famous as an engraver, patron, archaeologist and traveler. He was the archetype of the eighteenth-century art amateur and irrevocably linked his name to the monumental project of the Voyage pittoresque. The abbot Saint-Non, a man of great culture, archaeologist and refined engraver, undertook his journey to Italy between 1759 and 1761, being spellbound by the beauties of the Kingdom of Naples and Sicily. Returning to France, he decided to personally finance an immense work that could describe those lands. To do this, he recruited an exceptional team of artists, including painters Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Hubert Robert, and he used the detailed diaries of Dominique Vivant Denon (future first director of the Louvre). The Voyage pittoresque ou Description des royaumes de Naples et de Sicile by abbot Jean-Claude Richard de Saint-Non (published in Paris between 1781 and 1786) is considered one of the most monumental, famous and precious illustrated books of the entire 18th century. It represents the peak of the Grand Tour publishing phenomenon and the highest expression of Enlightenment curiosity toward the archaeological, artistic and natural patrimony of Southern Italy.
