Lucania, Metapontion. Ca. 325-275 BC. Diobol (Silver, 10 mm, 0.9 g). Obv: Head of Athena to right, wearing Corinthian helmet. Rev: ΜΕΤΑ. Barley ear with leaf to right; above leaf, cornucopiae. Reference: HGC 1, 1078; Johnston F21b. Metapontion, founded by Achaean settlers on the fertile coastal plain of Lucania, prospered through agriculture and trade. Closely associated with Pythagoras, who spent his final years there, Metapontion became an important centre of Greek life in southern Italy.
