Luxurious Bar Brooch With 2.70 Ct Old Cut Diamonds in Gold & Platinum

Well into the 20th century, the path to a new piece of jewellery rarely led to a jeweller. Much more often, women and men turned to a goldsmith to have a new piece crafted according to their own ideas and in collaboration with the artisan. A typical approach can often be observed: instead of creating entirely new pieces from scratch, existing rings, brooches, and necklaces were frequently incorporated and partially reused. This way, jewellery was created that continued the story of one’s family while being both steeped in tradition and modern at the same time. The unique brooch presented here, dating from the early 1920s, is one such piece. It is shaped like an elongated navette and belongs to the type of stick pins that were incredibly popular at the time. The fact that it features a display side made of elegant, coolly sparkling platinum on a body of yellow gold is also perfectly in line with the fashion of the period. However, the diamonds used to decorate this piece richly exhibit a much older cut style! The nine centrally set gemstones feature individual old cuts and were likely crafted in the first half of the 19th century. The larger stones have a total weight of approximately 2.50 carats and are accompanied by smaller old cuts and rose-cut diamonds. The hallmarks allow us to date the piece very precisely. The pin bears the Austrian bear’s head mark, which was only used between 1922 and 1925. The city mark “W” further reveals that the brooch was made in the capital city of Vienna. The pin is in excellent condition. Thanks to a bayonet clasp, it closes securely. Both then and now, its applications are versatile: pin it vertically onto the lapel of a blazer, horizontally onto a belt, or use it to fasten the neckline of a wrap blouse.
