Magnificent Belle Époque Pendant Brooch with Diamonds in Silver & Gold, c. 1910

The years around 1900 brought a formal language to the world of jewellery with the so-called "Garland Style", which contrasted Art Nouveau with a more classic, refined style. Echoes of Louis XVI forms and fine motifs from classical antiquity enlivened a neoclassicism that valued small bows as much as meticulous festoons and decorations with laurel leaf motifs. Jewelry in this style was mostly made from precious materials, richly set with diamonds and set in silver or platinum. A particular specialty of the time was convertible pieces that could be worn in different ways. This meant that an expensive purchase could be used in a variety of ways, depending on the occasion and dress - either as a brooch or as a necklace. This piece of jewelry is a beautiful example of this style. It develops from two loops from which three movable pendulums set with diamonds hang. Diamond diamonds complete the triangular shape, which ends in a bezel-set diamond. A total of 41 old brilliant-cut diamonds weighing around 2.62 ct are set in silver and set in gold on the back. The piece of jewelry can be worn as a necklace. It has two hooks on the back with which the attached chain can be easily unhooked. This allows the piece of jewelry to be worn as a large brooch. The delicate anchor chain is set in the middle with a carré-set diamond and can also be worn short or long thanks to an intermediate eyelet. Austrian import marks, which were used between 1902 and 1922, help us to date the piece. This magnificent piece of jewelry, which has been carefully designed down to the last detail, is in first-class condition. It came to us from Cologne.
