A particularly elegant French picture frame in the Rococo Revival / Louis XV Revival style, dating from around 1900. This finely proportioned frame is characterized by a distinctly rich ornamentation, with floral motifs, foliage, scrolls and graceful volutes. Especially the four corners are particularly beautifully worked and, together with the central ornaments on the top and bottom, form a harmonious and highly decorative whole. The design clearly draws on the French Louis XV- and Rococo tradition, but the execution is characteristic of the revival of these styles at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The frame is built around a wooden profile on which richly worked decorative ornamentation is applied, with a gold-colored finish. The warm gold tones are accentuated by darker nuances in the deeper ornaments, making the relief come beautifully into its own. A striking detail is the deep red Bordeaux inner edge, which forms a subtle yet rich contrast with the gilded outer frame and gives the whole an elegant, luxurious appearance. The gilding shows a lovely natural antique patina, with small variations in color, dark accents and light signs of use. These traces contribute to the authentic character of the object and enhance the frame’s appearance. On the back there is a studio/trade label stating “Maison Lartigue – Encadrements d'Art – Fait main en France – Depuis 1902”. The label is shown as part of the object; the dating of the frame is primarily based on style, construction and execution. The frame has outer dimensions of approximately 59 × 48 cm and inner dimensions of approximately 41.5 × 31 cm. The weight is about 2 kg. Condition The frame is in good antique/vintage condition, considering its age. There are small signs of aging and wear, as well as natural variations in the gilding and patina. These are visible in the photos and are part of the character of the object.
