Målerås - Mats Jonasson - Sculpture

Mats Jonasson – Målerås Glasbruk – Masqot “Shama” – model/patroonnummer 8163 - Swedish lead crystal sculpture A distinctive and expressive crystal art object from the Masqot series, designed by the renowned Swedish glass artist Mats Jonasson (1945) for Målerås Glasbruk, Sweden. This model, “Shama”, presents a powerfully stylized human face or mask. The striking eyes, long geometric nose section and asymmetrically shaped side give the sculpture an almost archaic and mystical appearance. The object is manufactured from clear lead crystal, combining transparent, matte, and darkly accented portions. Through these different treatments a special three-dimensional effect arises and the expression of the face changes depending on the lighting and viewing angle. A hallmark of Mats Jonasson’s work is the way images and reliefs seem to emerge from the solid crystal. The Masqot series belongs to his more pronounced and sculptural designs and forms an interesting contrast with the well-known animal figures for which Jonasson also gained international fame. Remarkably, the original transparent factory label is still present, with the note: Mats Jonasson – Målerås – Sweden – Full Lead Details Designer: Mats Jonasson (1945) Manufacturer: Målerås Glasbruk Origin: Sweden Series: Masqot Model: Shama Period: circa 1980s Material: lead crystal, partly matte and decorated Weight: 132.9 grams Marking: original Mats Jonasson – Målerås – Sweden – Full Lead factory label Dimensions: H 7.5 cm x W 5.0 cm x D 2.1 cm Condition The sculpture is in very good vintage condition and presents exceptionally well. At the underside/bottom edge there is one very small flea bite, which is hardly visible when the piece is displayed upright. This minimal imperfection is clearly shown in the photos for completeness. Furthermore the crystal is in nice condition. The original factory label has also been preserved. A special and collectible example of Swedish glass art, with a powerful sculptural presence and the immediately recognizable design of Mats Jonasson for Målerås. This object is shipped with smart packaging, securely packaged, sent by registered mail and insured with track and trace.
