His works combine elements of Fauvism, Surrealism, and Jewish folklore in a unique way. Chagall’s art is known for its luminous colors, dreamlike compositions, and symbolic motifs deeply rooted in his cultural identity and personal mythology. Chagall was strongly influenced by the Fauves, especially Henri Matisse, whose intense color palette and decorative approaches echo in Chagall’s works. In paintings such as “I and the Village” (1911) one sees Chagall’s bold use of color, reminiscent of Matisse, paired with surreal elements that bring him closer to artists like Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. While Miró and Dalí often explored the unconscious and the dreamlike, Chagall anchored his visual language in a personal, symbolic world shaped by his Jewish roots and memories of his childhood. The poetic and mystical qualities of Chagall’s works, such as the floating figures and inverted houses, recall the works of Odilon Redon, a Symbolist who also infused the supernatural and dreamlike into his art. Redon’s influence is evident in Chagall’s ability to elevate the everyday into a spiritual and magical dimension, creating a bridge between reality and imagination for both artists. Chagall’s works, like “The Birthday” (1915), are permeated by a similar blend of dreams and symbols that can also be found in Redon’s paintings. Chagall’s deep connection to his Jewish roots is a central aspect of his art and parallels artists such as Chaim Soutine, another Russian-Jewish painter who wove his cultural identity into his expressionist works. While Soutine often emphasized the emotional intensity of his subjects, Chagall rendered his works as colorful and poetic visions that radiate hope and spirituality. This link between personal mythology and universal symbolism made Chagall a uniquely important figure in modern art, influenced by both the avant-garde and traditional cultural values. Marc Chagall remains a standout figure of modern art, whose work is shaped by a distinctive blend of Fauvism, Surrealism, and Jewish folklore.
