Marie-Laure Vareilles (1966) - Hommes Femmes tous differents

This photo shows a large number of different people who are placed in separate compartments of a kind of grid. The individuals vary greatly in clothing, age, posture and cultural background and are mostly depicted from the side or from behind. The tight horizontal and vertical lines divide the image into small scenes, giving each person their own space, while together they still form a whole. The soft background colors contrast with the often brightly colored clothing, making the figures stand out clearly. The work emphasizes the diversity of people and cultures, but at the same time shows how many similarities there are in everyday postures and activities. Marie-Laure Vareilles (1966) is a French photographer and visual artist who also works under the name Maïlo. She studied interior architecture and initially worked as a graphic designer before turning fully to art and photography. Since her first big trip in 1985 she has photographed people and places around the world; she has now visited more than a hundred countries. She then uses these photos as building blocks for imaginative photo montages, in which real people and locations are combined into new, sometimes almost surreal worlds. Her background in interior architecture is evident in the careful composition and the use of space and perspective. In her work, themes such as cultural diversity, social changes, the environment and the coexistence of different people play an important role.
