Mario Avati (1921-2009) was a French painter and engraver born in Monaco. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he first practiced all printmaking techniques. From 1957, he devoted himself almost exclusively to the noir manner. He became the undisputed master of this demanding technique in the 20th century. His rigorous work mainly revolves around still lifes. His masterworks are today part of the world's greatest collections. La manière noire (or mezzotinto) is a technique of intaglio engraving on metal, mainly copper. Invented in the 17th century, it is distinguished by its reversed process: the artist works from black toward white.
