Operating number 05 003, service condition around 1937. Background: In 1933 the Reichsbahn ordered Borsig to build two three-cylinder streamliner locomotives of the Series 05, aiming to reach speeds of 175 km/h and more for the first time. The sister locomotive 05 002 set a world speed record for steam traction in 1936. In 1934 the Reichsbahn ordered a third example, the 05 003, with a radical deviation: the driver’s cab was moved all the way to the front so that the crew still had sufficient visibility on track and signals at 175 km/h. Because this also required reorienting the boiler, only a coal-fired firing installation was feasible. The 05 003 was delivered in 1937, but test runs were disappointing and the war prevented further adjustments. In 1944/45 the locomotive was rebuilt to the normal configuration — the “cab forward” version thus existed only for a few years. This model was produced in 2014 in a one-off edition exclusively for Märklin Insider Club members and was never available through regular trade. Version/production: – Brand-new construction; locomotive and tender mostly metal – mfx+-decoder with extensive sound functions; via a function button the sound of the coal-fire with ventilator can be activated – Precisely regulated high-power drive with flywheel in the boiler, three driven axles, with anti-slip bands – Very fine spoked wheels in the bogies – Smoke generator and standing machinist figure included for installation by the buyer – The extensive mfx+-play features are available in combination with a Central Station 2 from firmware version 3.5 Delivered in the original Märklin Insider packaging with viewing window. Condition: the locomotive is in excellent, barely used condition. The wine-red paint, the silver decorative line and the lettering are intact and sharp, the streamlined casing is undamaged and the running gear shows virtually no signs of wear. The original manual, the smoke generator, the machinist figure and all included add-on parts are present. Model tested and functioning.
