The Longest Year The work treats the dramatic year 1799 (according to the Revolutionary Calendar the year VII and VIII), in which France fought for survival on almost all fronts at the same time: • The threat: While Napoleon Bonaparte was far away tied up with the campaign in Egypt, the Second Coalition formed.
