The Bommel animated film "If You Understand What I Mean" from 1983 was the first and is still almost the only feature-length animated film produced in the Netherlands for both young and old. The main character is Olivier ‘Ollie’ B. Bommel, the popular creation of comic author Marten Toonder. The Dutch language was enriched thanks to the Bommel stories with words such as ‘denkraam’ and ‘minkukel’ and with expressions like ‘kommer en kwel’ and ‘If you understand what I mean’. The latter is Olivier B. Bommel’s oft-quoted saying and was thus a natural title for the animated film. It had long been Toonder’s dream to bring the urbane bear of distinction, who always wears a yellow jacket with a red checked pattern, to life on screen. He also called cartoons “the pinnacle of the comic.” Almost three years were spent on it before the film premiered on February 2, 1983, at the Tuschinski Theatre in Amsterdam. To make the film a success, the press was extensively informed in early 1983 with a press kit that publications were free to use without restriction. This press kit appeared in two editions, a red and a blue one. In addition, a small edition was produced of an information booklet about the film; Rob Houwer presents — Very special with unique information and full illustrations. In newspapers and magazines, later on the texts, photos and drawings from those press kits and from "Rob Houwer presents" were extensively read and seen.
