Marthe Prévot (1923–2016) was a French photographer and experimental artist, best known for her close association with Raoul Hausmann, one of the founding figures of Berlin Dada, and for her photographic explorations of portraiture, photograms, and multiple exposures. Born in Saint-Moreil, France, Prévot became Hausmann's longtime companion during his years of exile in France and shared his artistic environment in Limoges from the 1940s onwards. Their close relationship placed her in direct contact with the experimental traditions of Dada, photomontage, and avant-garde photography that had transformed European visual culture during the early twentieth century. Developing her own photographic practice, Prévot explored the expressive possibilities of the medium through unconventional techniques, including camera-less photography, multiple exposures, and experimental compositions. Her work combined an interest in photographic experimentation with an intimate approach to portraiture, particularly in her photographs of Hausmann, whom she documented during the later decades of his life. These images provide a remarkable personal record of one of the most influential artists of the Dada movement. In 1981, a publication devoted to her photography, Photographien. Photogramme. Mehrfachbelichtungen, was issued by Edition Copie in Hanover, highlighting the diversity of her experimental work. Her photographs were subsequently published by the Griffelkunst-Vereinigung Hamburg in 1982 and 1991, including a series of portraits of Hausmann. Following his death in 1971, Prévot also became the custodian of his artistic estate and played an important role in preserving and transmitting his legacy. Her work occupies a distinctive position within the history of postwar experimental photography, connecting the photographic innovations of the historical avant-garde with a personal and expressive exploration of the medium.
