Mask - Bena Lulua - DR Congo

The lulua masks, just like those of the nearby Kete, were used during masculine initiation rituals of the mukanda type. The initiates of Mukanda are young boys whom the father physically and symbolically separates from the mother by isolating them by age group in the bush. Circumcision is the first rite of Mukanda, followed by instruction such as: dances, music and the wearing of masks. The masks are only representations of a certain type of ancestral spirits known as bakisi. NB: Our parcels are shipped with insurance, warranty and a receipt.
