Background Information: This medieval bronze finger ring dates to the Crusader period and is set with a striking blue glass cabochon held securely within a raised claw setting. The bezel rises elegantly above the shoulders of the ring, which are decorated with finely incised vertical grooves, demonstrating the careful finishing typical of medieval metalworking. Blue glass was widely employed during the period as an attractive and affordable substitute for gemstones such as sapphire or turquoise. Finger rings of this type were worn throughout the Crusader States and across the medieval eastern Mediterranean by both men and women. Besides serving as personal ornaments, they could signify status, wealth, or personal devotion. The Crusader period fostered extensive artistic exchange between Western Europe, Byzantium, and the Islamic world, resulting in jewellery styles that combined influences from several cultural traditions. The ring was cast in bronze and finished by hand before the coloured glass cabochon was fitted into its carefully shaped claw setting. Workshops producing such jewellery operated throughout the Levant and neighbouring regions, supplying pilgrims, merchants, soldiers, and local inhabitants. Similar rings have been recovered from medieval settlements, castles, and trading centres, illustrating their widespread popularity. Dating to the 11th–14th century A.D., this ring belongs to a period in which the eastern Mediterranean became a crossroads of commerce, pilgrimage, and cultural interaction. Jewellery from this era reflects not only personal taste but also the transmission of artistic techniques and decorative fashions across vast geographical distances."
