Background Information: This medieval bronze finger ring dates to the Crusader period and is distinguished by its unusual twin-bezel design, each bezel retaining the remains of a coloured glass inlay. The surviving blue-green glass reflects a long-standing medieval tradition of using coloured glass as an attractive substitute for precious gemstones. Such rings combined decorative appeal with practical affordability and were worn throughout the eastern Mediterranean during the Crusader era. Twin-stone rings are less commonly encountered than single-bezel examples and illustrate the variety of jewellery styles produced during the 11th–14th centuries. The paired settings may have been intended purely for decoration, although medieval jewellery often carried symbolic meaning, with paired stones sometimes representing harmony, protection, or personal devotion. In the absence of inscriptions or documentary evidence, no specific symbolic interpretation can be confirmed. The Crusader States occupied a unique position between Western Europe, Byzantium, and the Islamic world, where artistic traditions and metalworking techniques influenced one another. Jewellery produced during this period frequently reflects this cultural interaction, blending Western ring forms with decorative elements inspired by the eastern Mediterranean. Bronze rings set with coloured glass were popular among pilgrims, merchants, craftsmen, soldiers, and settlers, and circulated widely through the trade routes connecting Europe with the Levant. The ring was cast in bronze using established medieval techniques before the two bezels were carefully formed to receive their glass inserts. Workshops specialising in bronze jewellery supplied both local communities and the growing population associated with pilgrimage and Crusader settlements. Similar rings have been recovered from medieval towns, castles, and archaeological sites across the eastern Mediterranean. Dating to the 11th–14th century A.D., this ring belongs to a period of remarkable cultural exchange and commercial activity. It represents the craftsmanship of medieval jewellers and the enduring popularity of personal adornment throughout the Crusader world."
