The previous owner, R.N. from Katwijk, stated that the object had been in his collection since the 1990s. According to the previous owner, the object had previously been in a private collection in the Netherlands since the 1990s. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner. Background Information: Pilgrim badges were small devotional objects acquired and carried by travellers during the later Middle Ages. This circular openwork example depicts a male head and upper body in relief within a broad border. Traces of raised decoration or lettering are visible around the border. As the surviving details do not permit a secure identification, the identity of the depicted figure and its association with a particular saint, shrine or pilgrimage centre remain uncertain. Such badges belonged to the extensive material culture surrounding medieval pilgrimage. Together with ampullae and other small devotional souvenirs, they were sold or distributed at pilgrimage destinations and could be attached to clothing, hats or bags. They served as visible evidence of a completed journey and as personal reminders of a pilgrim’s connection with a particular cult or holy place. Pewter and related lead-tin alloys were particularly suitable for the production of these objects. The metal could be cast in detailed moulds, allowing specialised workshops to reproduce figurative designs, inscriptions and openwork elements efficiently. Pilgrim badges consequently represent an organised craft tradition closely connected with the religious and commercial activity generated by important shrines. During the 15th century, pilgrimage routes formed extensive networks linking towns and religious centres throughout the Low Countries and wider Europe. Small badges travelled with their owners and could therefore circulate considerable distances from their place of manufacture. This piece forms a tangible connection to late-medieval devotional life and to the individuals who carried such personal objects on their journeys."
