• This piece is a classic example of an African portrait pipe (historically categorized in period trade catalogs as a "tête de maure"). It features beautifully rendered ethnic facial features and textured hair. The most notable characteristic is its deep, rich chestnut-brown and amber patina. This coloration is highly prized by collectors; it develops naturally over decades as the porous meerschaum mineral absorbs tobacco oils and heat during use. Size Cm 6x6x4 The second piece is carved in the likeness of a bearded man wearing a head wrap or stylized cap, reminiscent of an Orientalist motif or an Ottoman dignitary. It retains a much lighter, cream-colored finish, suggesting it was smoked significantly less than the other piece, or has been carefully preserved.
