Stoopendael after M. S. Merian. And: De europische Insecten. Naauwkeurig onderzogt, nat leven geschildert ein in print gebragt. With hand-colored title vignette, hand-colored final vignette, and 184 hand-colored copperplate engravings on 47 plates. 2 parts in 1 volume. Amsterdam, Bernard, 1730. Title, 3 leaves, 52 pages; 2 leaves, 84 pages. Large folio. Half-leather binding (circa 1920) with gilt spine and spine label (somewhat rubbed). Nissen BBI 1341-1342; Pfeiffer B6, A9; Hunt 484, 483. - The insects of Suriname in the fourth edition, the European insects in the first Dutch edition, and both together in the first folio edition. The volume on Suriname is Maria Sibylla Merian's now extremely rare major work, which owes its creation to the artist's journey with her daughter to South America between 1699 and 1701. The plates, significant both scientifically and artistically, depict exotic butterflies in all stages of development on flowering plants and fruits, mostly life-size, supplemented by some reduced-size depictions of reptiles and amphibians. According to a handwritten inscription on the first title page, the original coloring is by: 'alle Met haere eigene Coleùren afgeset, door G. Boom Camp', probably Gysbert Boomkamp (Dutch merchant and draftsman; c. 1700–1755).- Some very light staining in places.—The frontispiece, title page, and the following 3 leaves of text have been reinforced with Japanese paper at the outer white corner (at the bottom); text leaf 83/84 has been reinforced with Japanese paper at the outer white corner (at the top) (in each case, there is no loss of text or image).
