Der Band zu Surinam ist das heute extrem selten gewordene Hauptwerk Maria Sibylla Merians, das seine Entstehung der Reise der Künstlerin mit ihrer Tochter nach Südamerika in den Jahren 1699 bis 1701 verdankt. Die gleichermassen naturwissenschaftlich wie in ihrer künstlerischen Ausführung bedeutenden Tafeln zeigen exotische Schmetterlinge in allen Entwicklungsstadien auf blühenden Pflanzen und Früchten, meist in Lebensgrösse, ergänzt um einige verkleinerte Reptilien- und Amphibiendarstellungen.- Das Altkolorit stammt laut handschriftlichem Eintrag auf dem ersten Drucktitel von: 'alle Met haere eigene Coleùren afgeset, door G. Boom Camp', d.i. wahrscheinlich Gysbert Boomkamp (niederländischer Kaufmann und Zeichner; um 1700 - 1755).- Die Nummerierung der Kupfer im 2. Teil zählt 184 Abbildungen - da aber auf der ersten Tafel die ersten beiden Kupfer mit der 'I' nummeriert wurden, sind 185 Kupfer somit korrekt.- Frontispiz mit kleinem, hinterlegten Eckabriss im weißen Rand. Nissen BBI 1341-1342; Pfeiffer B6, A9; Hunt 484, 483. - The insects of Suriname in the fourth edition, the European insects in the first Dutch edition, and both together in the first folio edition. The volume on Suriname is Maria Sibylla Merian's now extremely rare major work, which owes its creation to the artist's journey with her daughter to South America between 1699 and 1701. The plates, significant both scientifically and artistically, depict exotic butterflies in all stages of development on flowering plants and fruits, mostly life-size, supplemented by some reduced-size depictions of reptiles and amphibians. According to a handwritten inscription on the first title page, the original coloring is by: 'alle Met haere eigene Coleùren afgeset, door G. Boom Camp', probably Gysbert Boomkamp (Dutch merchant and draftsman; c. 1700–1755). The numbering of the engravings in Part 2 lists 184 illustrations; however, since the first two engravings on the first plate are numbered 'I', 185 engravings are therefore correct. Frontispiece with a small, repaired corner tear in the white margin.
