MESOPOTAMIAN BLACK STONE AMULET IN THE FORM OF A SHEEP

Ca. 3000 - 2500 BC. A black stone amulet carved as a recumbent sheep with a compact body, raised head, long pendant ears and folded legs beneath. The eyes are set with pale stone ring inlays, and the nostrils are drilled. Further circular inlays are arranged in clusters of three across the flanks and haunches. Incised lines delineate the limbs and body contours. A transverse perforation passes through the body for suspension. Size: 50mm x 35mm; Weight: 47g Provenance: Private UK collection; From an old London collection formed in the 1990s.
