MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1873-A AM. Alamos Mint. NGC MS-63. KM-377; DP-As11. Tied for highest graded by NGC. Medium-dark toning over lustrous fields. Estimate: $600 - $900. Provenance: From the Clyde Hubbard Collection. About Clyde Hubbard (1916–2020) For generations of collectors, the name Clyde Hubbard has been synonymous with Mexican numismatics. Born in Philadelphia, New York, Hubbard’s lifelong passion for coining began in his youth and took firm root in 1930 when he acquired his first Mexican issue. During World War II, he served honorably as a bombardier in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Following his service, a role with Elizabeth Arden brought him to Cuba and eventually to Mexico in 1947—the country he would call home for the rest of his life. Settling in Mexico allowed Hubbard to immerse himself entirely in the region’s rich numismatic history. A member of the American Numismatic Association (ANA) since 1950, he co-founded the Sociedad Numismática de México in 1952 and held founding memberships in both the Federation of Numismatists of Cuba and Numismáticos Colombianos. His vast expertise and access to historic hoards made him an indispensable scholar; notably, he played a crucial role in examining the famous 1952 Charles & Johanna and Philip II hoard. Hubbard’s research culminated in foundational reference works, including A Guide Book of Mexican Coins: 1822 to Date (co-authored with T.V. Buttrey in 1969) and Hookneck: El Águila de Perfil (co-authored with David O’Harrow in 1997). His enduring legacy earned him numismatics' highest honors, including the ANA’s Medal of Merit (1976), the prestigious Farran Zerbe Memorial Award (1983), induction into the ANA Hall of Fame (1994), and Honorary Life Membership in the American Numismatic Society. Passing away in 2020 at the age of 104, Clyde Hubbard leaves behind an indelible mark on the field—and a legacy that lives on through his children, Felice and Jason, and the legendary coins he cherished.
