Ford Family on Outing – Ford Escort Advertising Campaign Photographer: Michael Joseph Medium: Original vintage darkroom photograph Campaign: Ford Escort / Ford Sport Mount size 50cm high by 40cm wide Signed and titled by Michael Joseph A wonderfully eccentric slice of British advertising photography, Ford Family on Outing is Michael Joseph at his playful best. Gathered around a Ford Escort is a gloriously unlikely “family”: moustaches, flat caps, sportswear, oversized trainers, an enormous boot — and enough visual oddities to keep the eye travelling around the photograph. Rather than simply photographing the car, Michael creates an entire cast of characters around it. The Escort almost becomes another member of the family, while the deliberately exaggerated styling turns what could have been a straightforward motor advertisement into something closer to a piece of visual comedy. It is precisely this kind of image that made Michael’s commercial work so distinctive: the product is present, but the people - and the story he invents around them - make the photograph memorable. The handwritten title, “Ford Family on Outing”, and Michael Joseph’s signature remain visible on the original mount, adding both character and provenance. An authentic vintage darkroom photograph from Michael Joseph’s working archive and a wonderfully period example of the days when advertising shoots were built around imagination, elaborate styling and a healthy dose of British eccentricity. Funny, stylish and unmistakably of its era - a Ford advertisement in which the cast threatens to steal the car’s starring role.
