Mid to Late XIXth C. Richelieu table- or bed cover. - Textile - 2.25 m - 2.25 m

An Exceptional 19th-Century Richelieu Embroidered Cover – With a Remarkable French Chateau Provenance This is a truly distinctive piece of 19th-century embroidered linen, combining exquisite Richelieu cutwork with other decorative embroidery. Rich in character, history and possibilities, it is a beautiful example of the fine needlework that once adorned the interiors of distinguished French homes. Its provenance is particularly appealing. I acquired this remarkable piece recently from the château close to where I live in France, from which I have obtained some magnificent examples of ancestral linen over the past two years. For those who have not yet read my previous descriptions, a little background is worth sharing. The château has fallen into a dilapidated state and is now in urgent need of major renovation and structural repairs. Like so many historic French properties, its owners have seen their financial resources diminish over the years, while the cost of maintaining such a substantial property continues to rise. Fortunately, the present owners are custodians of four generations of family linen, inherited from their ancestors. Little by little, they are parting with some of these extraordinary pieces to help finance the necessary restoration work. It is a privilege to have been able to acquire and preserve so many beautiful examples of this heritage. This cover is yet another fascinating discovery from that remarkable collection. Originally, it would have adorned one of the château's bedrooms. For much of its life, however, it appears to have been carefully stored away in one of the magnificent Normandy walnut armoires, neatly protected between sheets of silk tissue paper. A piece with two very different lives When I first photographed it in one of the bedrooms, I began to appreciate its decorative potential. It then occurred to me that this beautiful textile might be equally, if not even more, impressive when used as a table cover. I therefore photographed it in both settings, including on a dining table, styled simply with roses and antique blue plates. These arrangements are intended to inspire and demonstrate just how successfully this historic textile can be incorporated into an elegant interior. Whether displayed as a bed cover, used as an impressive table covering or simply appreciated as a decorative antique textile, it offers considerable versatility. The piece measures 2m25 x 2m25/ Mythological imagery and decorative embroidery The central figure is a mythical female character, belonging to the fascinating world of folklore, religion and ancient storytelling. Such figures were often accompanied by symbolic emblems representing particular beliefs, virtues or ideas. Please have a close look at the lady's dress. It has so finely been embroidered !! She is wearing a coiffe over her head and appears to were a hood. Her left arm is holding an aumônière , a pouch or beggar's pouch. It is gathered at the top with a cord which is clearly visible. The lady appears to be holding what looks like a bird of prey on her right arm, adding an intriguing element to the composition. The surrounding mythical emblems are equally worthy of attention, and I have included numerous photographs to allow you to examine these details more closely. I noticed wine goblets, shields, turtle etc. The combination of the central figure, the symbolic motifs and the intricate embroidery gives the piece a distinctive decorative presence. It is precisely these details that make historic textiles so endlessly fascinating: they offer not only beauty, but also a glimpse into the artistic tastes and decorative traditions of another era. A remarkable survivor from the 19th century Dating from the middle to the second half of the 19th century, this embroidered cover is in excellent condition considering its considerable age. Its survival, together with its château provenance and the quality of its decorative needlework, makes it a particularly interesting addition to any collection of antique French textiles. More than simply a beautiful piece of linen, it is a tangible fragment of domestic history, preserved for generations and now ready to begin a new chapter in a different home. An almost historical piece, with a story to tell and a beauty that deserves to be seen.
