"Mittag" (‘Noon’) Edward Cucuel

• Cucuel’s works are characterised by a light-filled, vibrant late Impressionist style • Outdoor and social scenes are Cucuel’s favourite subjects • His free, fluid brushwork creates a sense of dynamic movement and spontaneity The American painter Edward Cucuel first attended the art academy in his birthplace, San Francisco, before continuing his studies in Paris at the Académie Julian and the Académie Colarossi, as well as at the Académie des Beaux-Arts. After a brief stint as a newspaper illustrator in New York, he travelled back to France and Italy to devote himself to his further training. Further study trips followed before he moved via Berlin to Munich in 1907 to join the group ‘Die Scholle’. Leo Putz was his great role model here, and his exchanges with Putz and the latter’s plein air painting led to similar motifs in his own body of work. Women, in particular, were one of the most important subjects of his art. This resulted in numerous paintings depicting women bathing, relaxing, rowing or even drinking coffee, mostly at popular destinations such as Lake Starnberg, Lake Chiemsee or Lake Ammersee. Cucuel, who spent most of the First World War living in Holzhausen on the Ammersee, purchased a villa on Lake Starnberg in 1918. During this period, he commuted between his studio there and Munich. This work appears to capture a private moment of relaxation at lunchtime in the arbour right by the lake in the artist’s garden. | 1875 San Francisco - Pasadena 1954 | Moderne Kunst | Gemälde | Nummer: 26x2520 | Provenance: Privatsammlung, Baden-Württemberg; Grisebach, Berlin 30.11.2012, Los 400; Privatsammlung, Süddeutschland.
