Montblanc - Safety Pen No. 2 - Fountain pen

A0000005536 MONTBLANC SAFETY FOUNTAIN PEN WITH EBONITE CAP NO. 2 (Germany, 1910s/1920s): We present at auction an authentic relic of the history of writing: the legendary Montblanc Safety Pen No. 2. This instrument, forged at the dawn of the 20th century, is a living testimony to the origins of what would become the world's most famous writing manufacturer, when it still operated under the name Simplo Füllpen Gesellschaft. With the period’s classic proportions, it measures 12.5 cm in length (closed) and 1 cm in diameter. The body and cap are turned in black ebonite (hardened vulcanized rubber). Unlike many surviving units that have severely oxidized, this piece retains an exceedingly dark color and, more importantly, incredibly sharp engravings. The cap bears the primitive engraving of "MONT BLANC" with the mountain emblem, while the body features the rare and coveted seal "SIMPLO ORIGINAL MONTBLANC". The dome is crowned by the emblematic white star, which wears a beautiful yellowed patina forged by a century of age. It features the ingenious "Safety" mechanism: by rotating the tailpiece, the splendid solid 14-karat gold nib retracts into the reservoir, allowing the cap to seal hermetically the pen to prevent leaks. Condition (Expert Review) Payers are asked to carefully study the photo gallery, which is an essential part of the description. The item is in an exceptional historical condition: Ebonite and Engravings: No cracks or breaks. The engravings (imprints) are deep and perfectly legible, something exceedingly rare in centennial ebonite. Mechanics: The feed and retract mechanism of the retractable nib is shown to be functional. (Important note: As is strictly customary with Safety pens over a hundred years old, the original cork seals inside will be dried. Although the pen is mechanically operable, it requires the installation of a new cork seal by a professional restorer if the new owner wishes to fill it with ink and use it daily without risk of leaks from the tailpiece. It is sold as a collectible piece and delivered without a box). Shipping The item will be carefully protected and securely packed, with insured shipping and international tracking number. A golden opportunity for purists and Montblanc archivists to add the brand’s foundations to their collection!
